Northeast
Harbor - Tony Smith, Chairman of Acadia Disposal District reported
today that the Town of Southwest Harbor, at their annual town
meeting on Monday May 3, 2004, voted to join the Acadia Disposal
District. This brings the member towns to five in total including
the Towns of Mount Desert, Cranberry Isle, Trenton, Tremont and
now Southwest Harbor.
Acadia Disposal
District is a quasi-municipal, non-profit and non-taxable corporation
owned by the member towns and dedicated to better understanding
the disposal of waste and to finding better ways to reduce both
the quantity and costs. Considering that the disposal costs often
are the second or third largest municipal expenditure this is
a very important goal.
Each member
town is represented by a director, appointed by that town, serving
on the Board of Directors. Currently that Board of Directors is
considering a number of possible options for the future - including,
but not limited to, the purchase of EMR, Inc.; developing a new
transfer station on or off- island; use of an existing transfer
station off island and door-door pickup and direct to PERC of
household waste. They are also in the process of implementing
a ban on cardboard from the waste stream and have helped form
a solid waste committee in each member community along with a
computer driven information gathering program installed in each
member community.
The Acadia
Disposal Board has a web site at http://acadiadisposaldistrict.org
and meets at the fire station in Somesville at 1:30 on the first
and third Thursdays of the month with the public invited.
