The
ADD Board of Directors is currently reviewing several options
that would create a major overhaul of the current waste disposal
system:
Reviewing
a proposal that ADD purchase and then operate the E.M.R.
solid waste transfer facility in Southwest Harbor;
Discussing the possibility that the City of Ellsworth become
a member of the ADD, and possibly utilizing the current Ellsworth
transfer station as a regional facility operated
by ADD;
Considering the option of door-to-door pick-up of household waste (MSW) and direct transport to the Penobscot Energy Recovery Co. (PERC), and utilizing a transfer facility
only for bulky wastes, demo debris, waste wood and recycling
materials;
Searching for other sites, both on and off Mt. Desert Island,
that might be suited to developing a transfer station;
Developing
a cardboard policy to remove cardboard from the waste stream, thereby saving a significant
amount of tax money in disposal fees and adding revenue from
the sale of cardboard;
Evaluating Pay-As-You-Throw (PAYT),
a system in which a fee is charged for disposal of all trash, as a way to reduce or eliminate the cost of solid-waste management from town budgets;
Setting up local solid waste and recycling committees in each town to help advise their town's officials and citizens.
