Universal Waste Disposal

As of January 1, 2006, television sets, computer monitors, and other mercury containing items can no longer be disposed of in your regular household trash. As per State DEP policy, municipalities are now required to provide a way for their residents to dispose of these items which are termed Universal Waste.

On behalf of the member towns, the Acadia Disposal District is pleased to announce that Universal Waste will be accepted at the EMR Inc. transfer station in Southwest Harbor.

Residents of the Towns of Southwest Harbor, Tremont, Mount Desert, and Trenton can take their Universal Waste to the EMR facility on the second Saturday of January, March, May, July, September and November between the hours of 9:00 A.M. and 1:00 P.M. An EMR attendant will direct you to a special designated Universal Waste drop-off area.

TV's and computer monitors can be disposed of at no cost to the resident. There will, however, be a fee for disposal of other items. Other examples of Universal Waste include computer hardware, some lamps, batteries, ballasts and mercury containing devices such as thermometers. Please contact EMR at 244-4347 or your town office for details.
